Characteristics of nepheline and its application value in industrial fields

Aug 02, 2024

Nepheline is a silicate containing aluminum and sodium. It is colorless or white, sometimes gray, green or red. It has a glassy luster and a fatty luster on the fracture.

It is mainly used in the glass and ceramic industries and can also be used as a raw material for refining aluminum.

It is mainly used in the glass and ceramic industries and can also be used as a raw material for refining aluminum. It is mainly found in alkaline intrusive rocks, volcanic rocks and pegmatites related to syenite.

Fresh nepheline produced in rocks is not easy to identify with the naked eye. Sometimes it looks like alkaline feldspar, sometimes like quartz, and it is very easy to confuse. However, nepheline often has an oily luster and no perfect cleavage, which can be used to distinguish it from feldspar. Nepheline often contains some dyed spots and is easier to weather. If you find that there are variegated altered materials around the particles or in the cracks, it is often nepheline rather than quartz. In addition, if nepheline powder is placed in a test tube and boiled with concentrated HCl for a few minutes, a colloid will appear in the residue, which can also be distinguished from quartz.
